Cereal and Math: Help Your Teacher!

Dear students,

We are all home on Winter Break. I hope you are all having wonderful time with your families. I hope you make special memories, and yes, I hope you enjoy a good book or FOUR.

I am enjoying my break as well. Lots of time to read! Also lots of time to think.
For example, I bought this new cereal:

I poured some into my bowl. It looks healthy, and I love yogurt. (You've seen me eat some at school.) Some of the Cheerios are yogurt-coated. Some are not.

I poured about a scoop's worth of cereal in my favorite bowl.

Need a book recommendation?

The students in 4A are on winter break, but I hope they are still reading.
In case you need some book titles, here a few you might try:

A Perfect Time for Pandas by Mary Pope Osborne--Magic Tree House #48
I loved this one! Jack and Annie go on an adventure and help rescue pandas. It teaches about endangered species, too.

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy
It's an adventure about all those princes you hear about in fairy tales. Funny and exciting, too!

Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst and Lane Smith
Lulu wants a brontosaurus for her birthday. She usually gets her way! It's a silly adventure that I really enjoyed. Does she get her dinosaur or not?

False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

This is an adventure about a boy who named Sage. Sage is an orphan who has to scramble to survive. Determined to make his way, he becomes a part of a plot to become King. It's exciting and full of twists and turns. It's also part of the Ascendance Trilogy. I couldn't put this one down when I read it. Part 2 is almost out! ;-)

What Did You Learn Today?

Today in class we did the following:

We continued with our read-aloud.
Mrs. Alaniz showed us how she responds to books in her notebook. We noticed she asks questions and gives opinions about events. We are at a really good part of the book, too.

Next we began our Mock Caldecott study by going to the library and reading some previous winners. A BALL FOR DAISY is the 2012 Medal Winner. As we read each book, we asked ourselves what made the book a winner. Tomorrow we will begin deciding on our own list.

Then we reviewed expository writing and how to include examples in our compositions. We also continued revising and editing our novels.

We also worked on long division. Mrs. Alaniz has posted a screencast for us to practice at home, too.

And we also began studying batteries and circuits and did an activity we will continue tomorrow. Look for that post soon!

It was a good day of learning in 4A!

We Celebrate 12-12-12 Day!

Today we celebrated 12-12-12 by writing about 12 things.

We love to set goals in our class! We set goal for the amount of books we each want to read this year (40 for us, 600 for Mrs. Alaniz), for our writing, and for many other things.

(By the way, do YOU have a goal for your reading? We always know what book to read next!)

We have also set goals for this blog. We check the page views on our Revolver Map every Wednesday and we even make predictions about the number of page views we will get the next time. We learn a lot of math with our blog!

Back in September, we decided we wanted more and more readers.

We set the goal of 25,000 page views by Dec. 31^st! If we reach that number, we will celebrate in January and have a BLOG-A-BRATION!
