Today in class we discussed this word:
array
This word means "an arrangement of objects in rows and columns".
This egg carton is an example of an array.
How many rows do you see? How many eggs are in each row?
One dimension of this egg carton is 2 (the number of rows).
One dimension of this egg carton is 6 (the number of eggs in each row).
This egg carton is an array of 2 X 6.
We looked for arrays in our classroom. We found one! (See above!)
What are the dimensions of this array? Can you find things at home that come in arrays?
Tomorrow, we will be discussing this word:
factor

My mom has 2 pictures in her office. The dimension is 2x1.
ReplyDeleteOnce you learn about arrays, you're going to start seeing them everywhere!
ReplyDeleteOne example I have at home is the box of soda in my fridge. If you could use x-ray vision to see through the box, you would see that it is a 2 x 6 array. I have a question for you: Why don't they make boxes of soda that are in 1 x 12 arrays?
Next time you are at the grocery store, you should go on an array scavenger hunt. I bet you would find lots of good examples.
Mr. Stockus,
DeleteThank you for replying to our blog post.
We will answer your question:
They don't make boxes of soda in a 1 X 12 array because:
-it won't fit in a grocery cart
-it won't fit in the refrigerator
-it might snap in half
-it would cause more waste
Thank you!

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! I agree with you that the box probably would not fit in the refrigerator. It would be way too long!
DeleteI did notice a different size box of 12 sodas at the store the other day. This box wasn't as long as the usual refrigerator pack. It wasn't a square, but it was pretty close. I couldn't see inside to check the dimensions. What do you think the dimensions could be?
today i went to kroger. i bout eggs that where in an array.it was,2x6 and 6x2.
